Our History
Union Grove Baptist Church was organized April 29th, 1888 by Reverend James Preston Poindexter, along with three other clergy & twenty charter members. Union Grove initially began as a Sunday School Class held in a log cabin on Mt. Vernon Avenue in Columbus, Ohio. Growing under the leadership of Rev. H.E. Nash, the church’s 1st pastor, the church moved into a new site located at 218 North Champion. Avenue. By the favor of God & faithfulness of the membership, Union Grove then transitioned to its current location. The cornerstone for the new church was laid on July 21, 1889 & our congregation proudly marched into our new edifice on December 25, 1889.
Across the rich history of Union Grove Baptist Church, 10 pastors have faithfully shepherded this church; leading the congregation in development of their personal relationship with God as well as carrying out the purpose of Jesus Christ while on this earth.
For over a century, Union Grove Baptist Church has not only been a Christ-centered place of worship but also provided refuge for those who are in need and warm fellowship for all who come through her doors. With a strong emphasis on Christian education, evangelism, and missions, Union Grove continues stand as a beacon in the King-Lincoln Bronzeville community.
